Ted sees Cindy again with a girl who he thinks to be her room-mate, but she turns out to be Cindy's girlfriend whom she later marries. It is revealed that Ted first meets his future wife while acting as best man at a wedding (during which he is caught outside in the rain without an umbrella). Lily gets mad when Marshall tells his family that they are trying to have a baby, but the two work out their issues. Barney's mother decides to sell the house he grew up in. While packing their mother's house, James and Barney see an unsent letter to Sam Gibbs, which leads to their discovery that Sam Gibbs was the father of James. Loretta offers the identity of Barney's father on a sheet of paper, but Barney tears this up after realizing Loretta's efforts as a single mother. Ted rejects the offer of Goliath National Bank to design the previously scrapped new headquarters, but accepts it later. Lily persuades Robin to delete Don's number, and though it doesn't happen right away, Robin eventually forgets Don's number, and declares that she's finished with the relationship. Robin's new co-anchor, Becky, steals all her spotlight, which frustrates Robin. GNB Headquarters is supposed to be built at the site of an old building, which is an architectural landmark. This gets Ted into rivalry with Zoey, a beautiful girl who's upset about the landmark being torn down to make way for the new GNB headquarters he's designing. Zoey signs up for Ted's class and gets his students on her side of the fight to save the building being torn down for the new GNB headquarters. Barney discovers that the man he called his uncle when he was young is actually his father but asks Robin not to mention it. Robin tells the story of her old friend from Canada, Jessica Glitter , and explains that friends drift apart. Ted proves a point to them by calling up his old friend Punchy which causes him to impulsively show up in New York. Later, he asks Ted to be his best man at the wedding. Seemingly, this is the wedding shown at the beginning of season six, where Ted must give his speech, however, since then, Robin has asked Ted to be her "best man" whenever she gets married. Ted and the gang have Thanksgiving dinner at Zoey's house, and Ted and Zoey become friends, though they show signs of struggle with feelings for each other. Barney Stinsons message at the end of the 12th episode gathered a lot of applause- "Bang someone in need". After meeting Barney's Doppleganger in the form of Marshall and Lily's fertility specialist, Dr. John Stangle, both Marshall and Lily were confirmed to not have problems. Sadly, shortly after Marshall receives the good news, Lily informs him that his father passed away from a heart attack.
